Looking for a simple baking idea you can do with your host children on a rainy afternoon? These chocolate chip cookies are one of the easiest and most popular treats you can make together. At My Family Au Pair, a reliable au pair agency in Germany, we often encourage simple shared activities like baking. Moments in the kitchen are not only fun for children, but they also strengthen connections, build trust, and create everyday memories during your Au Pair year.

Chocolate chip cookies may not be the healthiest snack, but they are definitely one of the loveliest. And most importantly, they are easy enough for children to help with.

Why Baking Is Perfect for Au Pairs in Germany

If you are an Au Pair in Germany, baking is more than preparing food. It is:

  • A creative indoor activity for rainy days
  • A chance to practice German vocabulary in the kitchen
  • A way to introduce recipes from your home country
  • A simple way to bond with your host children

For host families working with a reliable au pair agency in Germany, shared kitchen time is often where cultural exchange becomes real and natural.

    • Add the flour, buckwheat flour and baking powder and mix into into the dough with a fork.

    • Add in the chocolate chips and gently mix everything again.

    • Line a baking tray with parchment paper.

    • Make small heaps of the cookie dough on the parchment paper, leaving a lot of space between the heaps as the cookies become very thin and big.

    • Bake the cookies for about 15 minutes, until the edges of the cookies become light brown.

    • Let the cookies cool on the baking tray for about 2 minutes and then place them on a cooling rack or cutting board to cool. Do not stack the cookies until they are completely cooled, as they will stick together!

A Small Tip for Au Pairs

Let the children measure the ingredients, stir the dough, or count the chocolate chips. It keeps them engaged and makes them feel proud of the result. You can also turn this into a language activity by naming the ingredients in German and English. Baking becomes learning without pressure.
