We recently bought apple chips for far too much money. My daughter really wanted to try them and quickly decided that they were absolutely delicious and that she definitely wanted more. Since apple chips are very easy to make based on the ingredient list—apples and optionally cinnamon—I decided to try making them myself. The result was surprisingly tasty, and the chips keep well for about 2 to 3 days in a cookie tin before they start to become soft and chewy.
Ingredients for Apple Chips
- 3 to 4 apples, preferably Boskoop or a similar variety
- Ceylon cinnamon, depending on whether you want a cinnamon flavor or not
Homemade Apple Chips Recipe
Preheat the oven to 150°C (300°F).
Wash the apples and remove the cores without peeling them (there are inexpensive apple corers available in supermarkets for around €4).
Slice the apples into thin slices. I find they taste better if they are not paper-thin, as very thin slices tend to brown too quickly. Slices about 3–4 mm thick work best. For consistently even slices, apples can also be sliced very easily using a bread slicing machine.
Line a baking tray with parchment paper and place the apple slices next to each other on the tray. The slices should not overlap, otherwise they won’t dry evenly.
If desired, sprinkle with cinnamon.
Bake in the oven for about 45 minutes. Place an oven mitt or a wooden spoon in the oven door to keep it slightly open so moisture can escape.
Once the apples turn yellow-golden, remove them from the oven. The apple chips will still be soft while hot, but they become crunchy once they cool down, which takes about 1 minute.
Stored in a cookie tin, homemade apple chips usually keep for 2 to 3 days—unless they are eaten sooner.
