Is the au pair programme in Germany right for you?
Basic requirements
- You are under 27 when applying for the visa.
- You have at least basic German skills.
- You can usually stay for 6 to 12 months.
- You are fit for childcare from a health perspective.
Experience and mindset
- You have practical experience with children.
- You take responsibility reliably.
- You want to live as a temporary family member.
- You are open to different rules, routines, and culture.
Realistic expectations
- An au pair stay is not a normal holiday.
- Childcare and light housework are part of it.
- An application does not guarantee a match or a visa.
- Good communication matters on both sides.
The exact assessment depends on your nationality and personal situation, among other factors. For non-EU nationals, the legal rules for au pair employment and the national visa apply. EU citizens generally do not need a visa to enter Germany.

No. Au pairs pay no placement fee with My Family Au Pair. You may still have your own costs, for example for language tests, passport, criminal record check, visa, and travel.

No. First complete the freely accessible application form in the app. If your application fits after our manual review, you will receive an email invitation to activate your login and book an appointment with a recruiter.
We review your details manually. If your profile broadly matches our current family demand, we invite you by email to the next step. If we do not currently expect suitable families, we will also let you know by email.
For au pairs from non-EU countries, basic German language skills and an age under 27 when applying for the residence permit are among the typical requirements. Depending on your nationality and the foreign mission, additional documents may be required. The current rules of the responsible German mission abroad are decisive.
What matters first are complete and honest answers, a current photo, and information about childcare experience, education, language skills, and availability. Later we may ask for documents such as passport, CV, motivation letter, childcare references, language certificate, police clearance certificate, and medical certificate.
No. Placement depends on suitability, available host families, and a mutual match decision. Only the responsible German mission abroad decides on a visa.
